Kalamazoo Tribute

Steve Kalamazoo Mokone is arguably South Africa's greatest player ever. He was the first black player to play in Europe in the 50s, and he has a street in Amsterdam named after him. Steve 'Kalamazoo' Mokone, nicknamed The Black Meteor is a former South African football player who was the first black player to play in a professional European league. He was born in Doornfontein, Johannesburg in 1932. His family moved to Sophiatown when he was six before settling in Kilnerton, north of Pretoria. Mokone began his career in 1955 with Coventry City, before signing for Heracles Almelo in 1958. A year later he was signed by FC Barcelona, but because they had filled their quota of foreign players, he was loaned to Marseille. He later played for Torino, before finishing his career in Australia and Canada.
